Triumph Scrambler 400X Review | Classy Yet Affordable

It feels great to back on a bike again and what better bike to kick it off with than the Triumph Scrambler 400X. I went in very sceptical about the quality of this bike but I was pleasantly surprised and how premium the bike looks for the price at $9990 AUD. It handled the commute perfectly as well as the highway but there was some buzz over 110kph or 70mph. Best of all I think this could be a dark horse small adventure bike.

    I see two problems here: 1) Definition of OFFROAD. For most Germans, offroad starts where hard pavement ends. However here in Scandinavia we got tens of thousands of kilometers of unpaved, public roads between settlements. Simply because those roads withstand the harsh nordic climate better than asfalt roads, are easier to maintain and cheaper to build. I would never call those offroad, because you could ride them basically on any bike, even a Harley. Then there are smaller logging roads of variable state of maintanance, but real terrain (off the road) is off limits to motorized vehicles anyway. 2) Marketing. Just now when watching this video, it was interupted by a BMW commercial, showing a rider on a F900GS in terrain where a light dual sport or even enduro is much more suitable. People buy then those 230, 250, 280 heavyweight bikes and get out on tracks like the TET, with the result that we basically every week see one or several posts in FB of riders who crash, get stuck, cant lift their bike... and cry out for help in remote places. For most of us average riders a lighter dual sport would be much better suited for trips like this, but far too many fall for this kind of marketing. I downgraded now, by the way, to an "adventurized" 701 Enduro (165kg fully fuelled) and did a trip from Stockholm to Albania and back on it - 7000km in four weeks. Worked very nicely, as long as you avoid the boring motorways.

    You're roads look pretty good compared to here in Southern California. I really like these 400cc Triumphs, but I couldn't ride one on the highway here.

    When trying to determine the off road, or at least off pavement potential, I would love to know two things. 1- How does it behave at low revs? Does it have the tractor factor that is so useful on the trails? 2 - Is the first part of the suspension travel plush? Does it feel like it has progressive rate springs? How is the compression and rebound damping? Lots of street oriented bike favor a linear response to load, whereas I find a more progressive response better in the dirt.     Looks like a good bike, maybe those engine vibes at 110 kph are due to newness of the demo bike? The speedo is a big miss for me, which is strange since Triumph normally do something interesting with the instruments. I heard people say it's difficult to see the RPM at a glance and the indicator warning light is too dim in daylight.

    So, Solid,how do the vibes at highway speed compare to a DR650? Actually, how does the riding experience as a whole compare to a DR650? Because this bike is as likely a replacement as any for my poor old bush pig. 😃

      Don't do it. Get a bike to go with the bush pig. I've made that mistake three times. You'll end up getting another DR, then spending even more on mods. Took me many years to finally learn that lesson. Just committed to having a bike for each purpose and the DR for days when I don't know what I want to. This triumph seems like a great urban runabout. If that's what you want, awesome. I sold my first DR650 and still had my rm250 and roadstar 1600 cruiser. Missed the dr almost immediately.

      @@caseymckeeborrego - You know, I recently had a hairline crack in the valve cover (at the base of the upper engine mount, a known weak spot on the DR). Got that welded and it seems to be holding fine. I just installed a new clutch, so I actually have a friction zone again. And I just yesterday spooned on a new Mitas E-07 rear, since the old one was squared off down to the wear strip. And now that’s she all spiffed up again, I find myself reluctant to let her go. 😂 Honestly, there’s really nothing out there that’s any better. I’ve just got the new bike itch, is all. 😉

    Love Triumph/Yamaha Balcatta, they're always great there. Also like how while the triumph looks more expensive on paper than some of the similar models by other manufacturers it comes with a lot of 'extras' in that price, so by the time you add all that on to the other models the prices are very comparable. Honestly its a toss up for me between this and the Honda CL500, Honda's parallel twin is very tempting for the highways but the Triumph does seem more offroad capable (and looks slightly nicer in my opinion). I think it's just going to come down to availability and the test rides when I'm ready to upgrade.

    There is no magic related to the weight of this bike. DR650 and XR650 reached even lower curb weights decades ago using heavy steel frames with no compromises on longevity or titanium/magnesium alloys. Modern bikes became bloated and obese, because nobody REALLY cares about the weight in the end. Riding backroads solo is a nice dream, though I doubt that 90% of adventure riders ever do anything more complicated than a group ride on some simple dirt roads. Who cares if you drop your +220 kg whale with 5 other guys around to help you out? A heavy bike is a nice thing to have on the highway though, which is the place where most riders spend most amount of time anyway. People vote with their wallets and we'd have a lot more sub 180 kg bikes if everyone really needed that. And we became so used to these bloated bikes that hearing about KOVE releasing a normal weight bike seems like a lie or a technical marvel.

    I can't imagine how I pay for an Austrian-Chinese machine. No matter how good it looks and is praised. Whoever has the opportunity and desire, let him take the risk. I traditionally bet on Yamaha. Everything else, especially what is not Japanese, is a compromise with immeasurable risk.

    790/890 engines have been suffering from camshafts failures. If you buy Ktm/husky/kove or CF with 790/890 engine you’re gambling that you will have your camshafts fail at 10-15k miles.

    After all these years the Chinese are doing what the Japanese did years ago. Providing cheap and reliable transportation to the American market. They are pushing the industry forward. Let’s see where it goes. I’d love to test ride the Kove 450 Rally the 800x and w few of the CFMoto bikes too.

    I was looking at the rally and the L. My final decision is going to be a LS that I can add a bigger tank and rally fairing to while ending up with a lower bike that I'll be better able to handle due to its lower height.

    The KTM 790 engine is infamous for very low mileage camshaft failures, there are thousands of posts on the subject... Because that KTM engine is made in China. I'm too poor to buy shady sh*t, sorry.

    I would rather buy 2 low mileage 2009-2012 BMW F650GSs with Rotax engine for less than one of these. Similar weight although 20 less horsepower (claimed by kove) .

    I used to have too large expectations as to off road riding. Now, at 62, I understand I will never be able to do what, I see, pro riders can. This is why I believe that realistically, with my skills, a scrambler would be more than enough to enjoy a "semi" off road situation (< 5%) and enjoy my on road (>95%) normal riding.
